The international illusionist competition “Magic Mania Gold 2018” concluded as a great success

On 5 October the international illusionist competition “Magic Mania Gold” was successfully concluded, organised for the fourth time by the famous illusionist couple Dace and Enriko Pecolli in collaboration with “Olympic Casino Latvia”. This year the main prize under the category “Stage Illusions” went to Tsai-Chin Cheng of Taiwan, and the prize under the “Stand up Micromagic” category will be taken home to Cuba by illusionist Ernesto Planas.

This year 10 already renowned illusionists took part in the competition, hailing from all over the world - Brazil, Cuba, Taiwan, Russia, Germany, Italy, Lithuania and Estonia for 8 countries total. Amidst a magical atmosphere, the jury and visitors were surprised with first-class magic tricks and performances rich in humour, some of which involved visitors too.

The event “Olympic Voodoo Casino” hosted appearances by such notable public figures as the TV show hostess Lelde Ceriņa and her husband Aivis Ceriņš, TV personality Renārs Zeltiņš and his wife Ieva Koha-Zeltiņa, duo “Dvines” (Anastasija and Katrīne Drozdoviča), singer Olga Rajecka, “Grand Palace Hotel Riga” manager Bernard Loew with his wife Svetlana Loew, Singer Sergejs Jēgers, journalist Ieva Adamss, actress Evija Skulte and others. In the course of the evening, one lucky visitor had a chance to win a special prize provided by the casino by participating in the magical lottery. The lucky winner of the night was Iveta Krancmane, wife of opera singer Aivars Krancmanis, who won a bottle of the exclusive champagne “Armand De Brignac Champagne Brut Gold”.

The organisers of this event emphasize this year’s “Magic Mania Gold” competition as a special and long awaited occasion. International Magicians Society arrived from USA to Latvia and presented “Olympic Casino Latvia”, the main organiser of the event with The Merlin Award for their contribution in promoting and developing illusionist magic. Manager Gints Pakārklis accepted the award expressing great appreciation and will to continue this tradition in the future. Illusionist couple Dace and Enriko Pecolli also received a prize for their performance “The Underwater Bubble Show” which was evaluated as the Best Family Show of 2018.

“Magic Mania Gold 2018” jury member and featured star of the event Aaron Crow from Belgium, who has recently become well-known in the US for his appearance in “America’s Got Talent”, expressed his gratification with the participants’ performances: “Each illusionist has their own special “touch” and stage charisma, so the jury had their work cut out for them and the scores were similar. It’s not easy to compare performances of such distinct artists, however, on behalf of the jury I can judge performances as high-class as we witnessed in this year’s competition with genuine approval. Competitions like “Magic Mania Gold” help to sustain magic – if there are affiliates to help put it into effect, then everyone’s a winner.”

The competition featured two categories: “Stage Illusions” and this year’s novelty “Stand up Micromagic”. After the jury’s votes the first place under the category “Stage Illusions” went to Tsai-Chin Cheng from Taiwan, who convinced spectators with an authentic performance plentiful in surprises. On the other hand under the “Stand up Micromagic” category it was Ernesto Planas of Cuba who pulled away from his competition with an uplifting and colourful performance. Each first-place recipient also received a 1500€ cash prize.

First-place recipient in the category “Stage Illusions” Tsai-Chin Cheng was openly delighted about his prize, because as it turns out – it was not only his first time coming to Europe, but he also got to meet the same illusionists in person that inspired him to begin his career: “This is my first time to Europe! Not only is this substantial experience, but also the biggest accomplishment in my career up to this point. To share the stage with my role models, illusionists is a great honour, moreover to compete for one prize and come out on top is just incredible.”

“The competition was challenging, because every artist gave their best on the stage, demonstrating an outstanding level of illusionism. I’m truly happy that a competition of such quality exists and if in addition there is a prize to be won, I’m twice as glad. I’m sure I will return to Latvia in the near future,” first-place winner under the category “Stand up Micromagic”, Ernesto Planas of Cuba shares his impressions.
